We all fall victim to the occasional coke or soft drink, but with the caloric content of a 20 oz bottle of Coca-Cola carrying 240 calories and 65 grams of sugar (that’s over 3 times the 20 gram recommendation for women made by the American Heart Association), one too many indulgences can quickly set you back when you’re trying to get fit. I am a coke craver myself, and it’s one of the biggest urges I have to fight while eating well. Since I don’t touch anything with artificial sweeteners (they make me incredibly sick), I’ve had to get creative with my sweet drinks.
Luckily, there are more options now than ever. While La Croix and Topo Chico are trending (and delicious), they don’t have a place in the “sweet drink” category. Here are my recommendations for 3 sweet drinks you can safely indulge in (all found at Whole Foods):
We’ve all heard of coconut water, but have you heard of maple water? With 35 calories and 8 grams of sugar, this sweet drink tastes exactly how it sounds: water with an underlined syrup flavor. While there are few actual health benefits besides the presence of manganese and electrolytes, the light syrupy flavor definitely curbs my craving for a coke.
So, you’ve tried Kombucha and it was a little too bitter for your palate? Definitely give Yerbucha a shot! It is a mixture of Kombucha and Yerba Mate, a caffeinated tea that is similar to Kombucha. The vinegar taste is significantly less noticeable, so if Holy Kombucha was tolerable but not your fave, definitely give this stimulating carbonated beverage a shot. One bottle is 15 calories and 4 grams of sugar, making Yerbucha a great Summer afternoon beverage.
I know, I know, the infused water trend has been popping for awhile, but have you tried this combination? Strawberries, lemon, and basil. If you infuse the water yourself, allow it to sit for 24 hours before enjoying… you won’t regret it. 0 calories, 0 guilt.
Hopefully one of these beverages can be your new Summer treat!
